The rest of the chapter centers around physical theories that pertain to time, namely the central results of relativity, thermodynamics, and the quantum theory. These results are radically at odds with our commonsensical picture of time. Physics debunks the unity of time and its unidirectionality.
Then Rovelli goes on to assess the role of time-keeping and clock synchronization technologies that have appeared during history. The most fundamental level of reality that we know of has little resemblance to the time we experience in our lives. The scope of the book is wide and impressive.
I cannot think of a detail that The Order of Time omits. My review cannot therefore deal with the whole book. Below are my two cents on the aspects that I found most intriguing and controversial. One of the most insightful points in the book is the explanation of our experience of the direction of time. For us, the events of the world always proceed from past to future, never vice versa.
We do not remember the future or predict the past. So if I could take into account all the details of the exact, microscopic state of the world, would the characteristic aspects of the flowing of time disappear?
If I observe the microscopic state of things, then the difference between past and future vanishes. I found this to be very convincing, perfectly naturalistic explanation. Nor is there a need for a Kantian a priori forms of sensibility, which putatively dictate the direction of time to us. On a macroscopic scale, it is utterly improbable that entropy would decrease. The increasement of disorder in our environment gives us the arrow of time.
No dubious emergentist or suspect transcendental arguments are needed. The direction of time is a matter of the scale at which we are looking at the world. A central argument of the book seems to be that time is not fundamental or ultimate, or even that time does not exist. So Rovelli entertains with the idea that time does not exist. But I think this is a crucial concept, something which should be spelled out. When reading the book, I found it difficult to grasp what is meant by the timelessness of the world, or the unreality of time.
Seraphina Dovetail is used to being called all these things. As the seventh-born daughter to a witch, and the cause of her mother losing both her powers and her life, Sera has always felt isolated. Until Nikolai Barrington. Now if only she could stop her growing attraction to her maddening boss—which is about as easy as this fiery elementalist quitting setting things on fire.
But when ghosts start dragging Sera into possessions so deep she can barely escape, and then the souls of lost witches and wizards appear trapped in mirrors, these two opposites will have to work together to uncover a much deeper secret that could destroy the Witchling world… The Witchling Academy series is best enjoyed in order.
